Blue Mountains and Whitemans Valley
Blue Mountains overlooks Upper Hutt from the Southwest with beautiful views of nearby hills and the distant Tararua ranges. Adjacent is the more rural Whiteman’s Valley.
Founded by the Whiteman family in 1871, it is home to a variety of farms and lifestyle blocks. These suburbs are just a few minutes from Pinehaven and Silverstream and share the local Short Straw Café, which is a great venue for a meal out in the country and more sizable events such as birthdays and wedding receptions.
Blue Mountains Rd and Whitemans Valley Road are both principal legs in the annual Tour de Whitemans cycle race. Frequented by cyclists across the region, the course provides challenge and reward and is used as a training trip for the Taupo round the lake race.
There is no public transport to and from Whitemans Valley and Blue Mountains, however there is a school bus for pupils who attend school at Mangaroa Primary further around the valley, or down in Pinehaven and Silverstream.
There is a play-centre in Blue Mountains, and two excellent primary schools in Silverstream and Pinehaven. St Patricks College Silverstream is a reputable private boys school, renowned for it’s sporting and academic excellence.
The valley is home to the Short Straw Cafe and Hutt Valley Gun Club – most amenities are available in Silverstream Village, or for residents living in the Northern end of the Valley, in Upper Hutt’s CBD.
